Chinese Red-Bellied Newt
(Paramesotriton Hongkongiensis)
We had one newt, about six inches long, that we believe to be a
Chinese red-bellied newt. If you think we are wrong, please let us know.
The newt was rather secretive. It spent part of the day hiding on the
land side of the aqua-terrarium. It could also be seen in the water from
time to time, but it staid away from the other newts and prefered to
sit in the same spot for hours. Since it staid away from where the
action is, the other newts often ate the food bowl empty before the
fire newt even realized that there was food. This was true even if the
newt was sitting right next to the food bowl when we put worms into
it. Unfortunately, this newt died rather suddenly, after several months.
