These newts were the reason why we have two aqua-terraria. When we bought the red-spotted newts and put them together with the other herps in the only aqua-terrarium we had, one of the fire-bellied toads immediately tried to eat one of them. Since red-spotted newts are quite poisonous and don't taste good, the toad probably would have spit out the newt again, but we decided not to take any chances and pulled the newt out of the toad while the toad was still swallowing it. Both the toad and the newt were fine. We then decided to house the small newts separately from the toads. This also separates them from the larger newts, although small and large newts seem to get along just fine.
Both newts spend most of the day in the water. They come out of the water from time to time and like to sit next to the Chinese fire-bellied newt. Although both newts appear to eat by themselves, we feed them with tweezers from time to time - just for the fun of it.
