Paramesotriton caudopunctatus

We have one newt, about seven inches long, that we believed to be a Chinese salamandrid. With the help of a fellow Web surfer (thanks, Mattias) we found out that it is a male Paramesotriton caudopunctatus. This is a rather big species from Chinese mountain streams. If you think we are wrong, please let us know.

The newt is a good climber. It climbs buckets and glass walls without any problems, although its toes are no different than the toes of the other newts. This newt also is very energetic. If it is upset or scared, it wanders along the perimeter of the tank (both on the land side and in the water) and climbs the walls from time to time. One time, when the cover of the aqua-terrarium was off, the newt managed to climb to the rim and could have easily escaped (we prevented it). Other than that, it stays in the water all the time and is very active there.
