Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad
(Bombina Orientalis)
We have two oriental fire-bellied toads, each about one and a half
inches long.
The toads are very active. One of them hides from time to time on the
land side of the aqua-terrarium. The other dives from time to time to
the bottom of the water side and stays there for long periods of time.
Most of the time, however, both of them sit in the water with their
heads poking out, looking for prey. For them, food is anything of the
appropriate size that moves. Newts, on the other hand, poke their
snouts into anything; if it smells right, it is food for them - even
if it does not move. We are sure that both toads are male, since each
of them at times jumps on top of the other toad and embraces it until
the other toad finally manages to escape.
We feed them small to medium sized, gut-loaded crickets twice a week.
The vitamins are important not only for good health but to
maintain the bright red belly.
